The grammar book for the Ladin of Val Gardena and the I.G.L.G.: Interactive Grammar for the Ladin of Val Gardena

Both grammars were officially presented on Friday, 29th November 2019, at the secondary school for economics Istituto Tecnico Economico “Raetia” in Ortisei.

The evening was inaugurated by the notes and sounds of the percussionist Georg Malfertheiner.

The director Leander Moroder formally introduced the event and spoke about this work, which represents a milestone for the activity of the Ladin Institute.

The school inspector Edith Ploner expressed her full appreciation and emphasized that this grammar is a fundamental tool to be adopted for the teaching of the Ladin language in school. This grammar was realized also because of the solicitation from the Directorate for Ladin Education and Culture and thanks to its collaboration.

Ruth Videsott, who is currently working on a similar project for the Ladin spoken in Val Badia together with Sara Moling, explained in a comprehensive manner and with detailed examples how the grammatical structure of the printed version was conceived.

The author Marco Forni and Paolo Anvidalfarei, who took care of everything concerning the graphic design and layout, illustrated the additional didactic content offered by the electronic version. This version is the result of the combination of a traditional reference grammar in paper form and a platform integrated with computer-assisted tools. The online version complements the printed one and offers an interactive system to learn the Ladin language of Val Gardena through a distance learning platform (e-learning).

The Gramatica ladin gherdëina (accompanied by the second edition of the book La ortografia dl ladin de Gherdëina, first edition 2001) was elaborated and written by Forni in collaboration with his work group: Karin Comploj, Alexander Prinoth, Marion Perathoner, Rita Plancker and Erna Bernardi. He could also rely on the scientific advice of Valeria Della Valle, Luca Serianni and Paolo Di Giovine from the University “Sapienza” in Rome and of Heidi Siller-Runggaldier from the University of Innsbruck.

Ladin is used as only language of description throughout the work. The first part of the grammar analyses phonetics and spelling, the second part morphology and the third part the syntax of the simple and of the complex sentence. From time to time, Ladin is combined with Italian and German, thus reflecting the school system adopted in the Ladin valleys. The grammar includes numerous tables and summary diagrams that help visualize and summarize the covered topics. Moreover, an analytical index figures in the appendix to facilitate the consultation of the book.
