Emergency excavations conducted in 2003 by the Archaeological Heritage Office of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano revealed a fortified settlement dating to the late Early Bronze Age and the beginning of the Middle Bronze Age (17th–16th century BC), as determined from the artifacts found there. The most significant discovery was a powerful barrier wall consisting of two facing walls filled with stones (an infilled wall). During these investigations, numerous ceramic and other finds were collected alongside more than 6.000 faunal remains, which form the main subject of this essay. They refer to an essentially agricultural community whose economy was based on cultivating fields and breeding domestic animals such as cattle, goats, sheep and pigs. These animals provided meat and secondary products, particularly milk. The significance of these finds compared to other sites in the region of the same age is considered in light of the environmental preconditions and presumed demographic structure of the community in question.
