The word
scarnuz is an import from the eastern part of Upper Italy; it comes from a cross of it. scartozzo “paper bag” and [kɔrn] “horn”. In that region the Latin chărta “paper” had spread, while in Romansh the word *pa(l)pĕriu “id.” was adopted. Scarnuz is neither “cavallo di ritorno” nor etymologically identical with the it. scaramuccio “skirmish”
